Gordon and Alyx get anime treatment
It's tough to believe eight years have passed since Phantasy Star Online 2 first went live, because its popularity is immense. Among SEGA's IPs, PSO2 commands considerable market share
. So it's not surprising it's finally come West, only that it took this long to do so. In fact, it's been so long, that fans took it upon themselves to translate the game
, and have been playing on Japanese servers since 2013.
PSO2 first launched in the Windows store, opening to beta testing via XBox. Now, it's expanding its horizons to the digital game juggernaut, Steam. The game is entirely free to play, but features a number of microtransactions to enhance play, which include things like permanent storage, rental storage, monthly boosters, the ability to sell items on the in-game player market, and of course, lootbox cosmetics. None of these are required to play the game, but free players will need to be much more frugal with their limited space. There are ways to earn access to the player market and optional cosmetic expansions at no cost, but these are randomized rewards, and very limited in duration.
PSO2 has been through no less than six episodes already, and the NA release is trying to play catch-up at a blistering pace. Expect to drown in content early on, as you try to upgrade all your gear and play through the (up to 12) player raid bosses & events. There's no shortage of things to do, and incentives to do them. It can be overwhelming, but luckily, the community has written a number of guides, and we'll be seeing more to come now that the game will be housed on Steam.
The Steam launch promises unique cosmetics celebrating its addition to the catalogue. What can we expect? Check out the above video for a sneak peak.
